What is a water softener? 

A water softener is a whole-house filtration system that removes hardness-causing calcium and magnesium minerals from your water.

Hard water-induced scale is the culprit of that popcorn popping sound. The higher the temperature of the water, the more calcium and magnesium will solidify and harden.

How do water softeners work? 

Ion exchange is the method by which water softeners remove calcium and magnesium from the water. Hard water flows through a bed of spherical resin beads as it enters the mineral tank. These sodium-ion-charged plastic beads are typically made of polystyrene. The resin beads have a negative charge, making them anions. Calcium and magnesium are cations as they positive charge. The negative charge of a minerals is attracted to the positive charge of the resin beads as opposing charges attract. The beads take hold of the mineral ions and remove them from the water as the hard water travels through the resin. The sodium ion is released when the bead seizes the mineral ion. As the water travels through the mineral tank, the resin column removes all of the hardness, and softened water flows out into your home.

What exactly are the parts of a water softener?

A control valve, a mineral tank, and a brine tank are the three parts of a water softener. These three work together to remove minerals from hard water, monitor water flow, and clean the system through a regeneration process on a regular basis.

What are the benefits of using a water softener?


Magnesium and calcium ions are removed from hard water by water softeners. The minerals that cause water hardness are calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+). Is it true that a water softener removes iron?

If your water has a lot of iron, some of it will unavoidably change to an insoluble form. If your water softener is processing a lot of iron, you should apply a chemical solution like Rust Out to clean the softening bed and extend the life of your resin beads. An iron filter or a more extensive filtration system like reverse osmosis is the best way to remove iron from water.

Is that really safe to drink soft water?


It is safe to drink soft water. When the resin beads grab hold of the hardness minerals during the ion exchange process, they release sodium into the water. However, the quantity of salt in softened water isn’t harmful, and it’s actually far lower than most people think. 

The quantity of hardness minerals removed is proportional to the amount of sodium added by a water softener. The softener releases two milligrammes of salt for every milligramme of hardness in the water. Only if you live in a region with really hard water does this become a concern. If the hardness of your water exceeds 400 parts per million, you should install a reverse osmosis system to clean the water you drink and cook with. Water is pushed through a semipermeable membrane in a reverse osmosis system, which removes practically all dissolved particles and salts from the water.
